Production companies - What are they and what do they do?
Productions companies are the main drives behind films. They control things such as the budget, the cast, the age rating and the content (to a certain extent). This is usually because they input the money to make the film, which can make them millions. There are 2 main types of production companies. Independent (e.g Blumhouse Productions) and Major (e.g 20th Century Fox)
Independent companies tend to be very small, and usually use things such as lottery funding to aid in their work. With these companies, the cast and directors will have more control over their creation.
Major companies are very large, famous companies that fund and back films with their own money. With major production companies, the cast and directors have very little control over their creation. the major company will decide who is in the film, and what will happen.
Paranormal Activity was worked with 'Blumhouse Productions Solana Films', and their film was distributed by 'Paramount Pictures' (logo shown to the right).Blumhouse productions are responsible for many other movies such as Insidious (2011), Sinister (2012), Dark skies (2013), and The Purge: Anarchy (2014).
Babadook worked with 'CauseWay Films', and was distributed by 'Entertainment One', 'IFC Films' and 'Icon Productions'.
What does a company's name represent about them?
The company's name and logo will represent what is to be expected from a film produced by them. They also allow the public to easily pick out which productions are theirs straight away. A horror production company will typically use dark colours and colours that are associated with horror themes, such as the colour Red, Black, White and dark shades of blue and green (Examples are above).
