BBFC Film Classification

In this post, I will be talking about what the BBFC.

BBFC stands for British Board of Film Classification. They basically rate, or classify a film, based on it context and content. Their job is to check a films rating, ad change it if need be. The film will be rated either a U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18 or R18.

Universal.

This rating means that the films content, language and story line is suitable for all ages. You will not find a horror film with a rating of U, as the content would be unsuitable for younger children.

Parental Guidance.

This means a film is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older.

Not suitable for children aged under 12.

A film with one of these 2 ratings, is not suitable for people under the age of 12 years old. A cinema will use a 12A rating to allow children under the age of 12 in, but only accompanied by a parent or career.

Not suitable for people aged under 15.

A film rated 15 will contain content that is unsuitable for people under the age of 15 as it can contain strong violence, strong language, sexual nudity, drug taking and discrimination (both language and behavior).

Not suitable for people aged under 18.

No body under the age of 18 is allowed to see an 18 rated film at the cinema or buy/rent an 18 rated video as it will contain strong language, violence and sexual activity.
