World War Z Introduction Analysis

World War Z -2013
    Horror / Drama / Si-Fi / Adventure / Action / Thriller

During the titles to World War Z, news reports are used background. The news reports start of with good news, ("good morning" / "Welcome to JTL morning news/ "well it is a great morning here in the studio") but over the duration of these titles, the news begins to get worse ("the virus has changed in a way that allows transmission between humans." / "The police say they've seen similar cases recently" /  "Scientists are trying to determine the cause of death".) Throughout the titles, they keep referring back to a virus that has been detected and that is spreading world wide. This is foreshadowing and hinting that this virus is to blame for the events that follow. The producers have decided to use the idea of a virus because it will make the movie more realistic, therefore, making the movie even scarier for the audience. It makes it scarier because it is easier for the audience to see happening in real life.
From the beginning of the titles, music is playing in the background. This music starts off slow, and calm, implying all is well, but as the titles go on, the sound begins to speed up and get louder implying and foreshadowing bad events to follow. This also creates a sense of confusion towards the end of the titles, as you can no longer make out what the news reporters are saying. The producers have decided to use news reports in the titles because it is providing some background knowledge to the audience about what has been happening around the world at the time.

After the titles, it cuts to what I would believe to be a Point of View shot (shown in the picture). This shot is being used to create a sense of curiosity as well as anticipation. The character is standing in a dark hallway, looking into somebody's bedroom through the slightly opened door. We can tell is it a bedroom as the main/first feature we can see pasted the doorway is the bed. The use of darkness in the hallway helps to create the sense that something bad is about to happen. This is  because darkness, in a horror movie, (dependant on its context,)  is usually associated with a bad event and/or characters.

As the clip moves on, we can see a hand reach for the door (to the left of the picture) and slowly push it open. As there is a lack of light, the hand is shadowed, creating the sense that the character is up to no good. We then see 2 figures/people run into the room and jump onto the bed. As they run in, they are making a childish screaming noise, which then turns into childish laughter. The childish screaming contributes to the feeling of anticipation, but after the audience hears the laughter, they feel a sense of relieve as a child's laughter implies innocents and happiness. The audience can then see that the 2 figures are children, 2 girls.  After the laughter, they move to a slightly tilted, two shot of what we will assume is their parents, on the bed. the producers have used a two shot of the parents to show the relationship between them. The children ran in, jumped onto the bed and playfully woken their parents up. They have used children in this clip to represent innocents and happiness. We previously thought something bad was going to happen, but now we can see that they are a happy, playful family.
A lot of the beginning of the movie, is the parents messing/joking around with their kids. The film producers have decided to do this to create a sense of how happy their lives are/were. It is also foreshadowing that everything is going to change.

Focus: lighting.
Throughout the titles, the producers have used a lot of dark colours. Especially Black. Even during the titles, they have put black shapes over the images. However, these black shaped makes the text stand out.
After the titles, they have used a dark hallway to create the feeling of fear, as well as anticipation. Darkness in a horror movie, is usually used o create suspense, as well as fear. The light, or light places will usually represent safety, and the good in the movie. But the darkness will usually represent an unsafe environment, or a place where something bad is going to happen.

The title's text is white, placed on a black background with a red "Z" in the background. The text is on a dark background to attract, and focus the audience on the main text on the screen.

I have included a clip showing the whole introduction to World War Z below.
