Horns Introduction Analysis

Horns-2013
          Horror / Drama / Thriller / Fantasy

The introduction to Horns starts off with a wide, long shot of the landscape, a forest during the twilight hour. There is voice over (Non-diegetic sound) in the background along with the natural sounds of the forest (e.g. leaves in the wind). The voice over is of a male voice who, we can assume is the main character of the movie.
"Everyone in town always took me as an outside. I didn't care. The only thing that mattered was her. She was my garden of Eden, and god knows how beautiful it was until that night. You know, no one is born evil. After all, the devil himself was a fallen Angel. But sometimes, when you go through hell, the only way out is to walk deeper into the fire."

The character is talking in the past tense implying that all of this is behind him. He is talking as if he has been through hell, and has now find peace, potentially foreshadowing his death. The quote "The only thing that mattered was her. She was my garden of Eden, and god knows how beautiful it was until that night." implies her character died, or will die during the course of the movie. It is also showing/telling the audience that they may be lovers, and that she was taken from him. When he says "no one is born evil", I believe, is implying that he did something bad, something that he regrets and/or see's as an act of evil.
The producers are foreshadowing the characters death's to engage the audience and to make them want to know what happened. He implies he was taken from her, which then implies she may have been murdered. This would make the audience curious as to what happened, and what he did about it.

After the voice over, it cuts to this shot  -
This shot tells us that these character will be the 2 most important characters in the film. They are using a 'two shot' to show the relationship between the characters. The audience will instantly be able to tell that these characters are lovers because of the way they are positioned. They are also kissing each other whilst embracing each other... The quote "The only thing that mattered was her" also tells the audience that they are both lovers.
The light and setting in this shot implies that, at this time, their lives are happy, peaceful and innocent. This will accentuate, and show how bad things got after she dies. In this shot, she is wearing bright coloured clothing, portraying her as an innocent character. However, he is in dark clothing, implying he is a shady/bad character.
