Font analysis

What is Font?

The font is the still of writing. It is the appearance of the text.

Different fonts will have different affects on the audience. The font can imply many things about the movie's genre and characters.

Colour also has a large impact on the presentation of the text/title as well. For the horror genre, colours such as Red, Black and occasionally White are used. This is because, in this context, the colours represent danger, blood and maybe even death.

What kind of affects will different fonts have on the audience?

Take this font for example. This is a typical horror movie style font. This font will provoke a sense of fear, and curiosity in the audience as it looks like it may have been written with blood, even though it is black.

At first, to me, this font could be implying that there may be murderer/killer in this movie, who decides to leave a message, in blood on the walls, wherever he/she goes. But then after thinking about it a bit more, I begin to think about what actually might happen in the movie. The font could imply the deaths of a/many characters and that the deaths are bloody.

This font could also be seen to be portraying the movie as a gory horror film.

This kind of font makes the text on the screen look posher, more official. Newspapers typically use this font as it makes the paper, and text look more professional. The letters have serifs. These are the little flicks/tails are the ends of the letters. Serifs can have many affects on the audience as they typically make the text look formal.   

This text reminds me of Shrek. Fairy tails tend to use this form of text/font to make the it seem old. Shrek was based in the medieval times, when people used to write like this. By using this text in the title of a horror movie, the producers are creating a sense that the movie is based in olden times, not modern. This is why fairy tails use this font, as they are based in olden times on myths that were around during that time and age.
As part of my research, I asked a few people what this style of writing made them think about. Some people said fairy tails, and 1 or 2 people said the old English Cider bottles, as this is the font that used to be used on the sides of their bottles.



 This font may be used in the same way as above. The style of writing was used a long time ago, roughly setting the time the horror movie may be set in. This font will make any text look both more professional, and formal. It is also visually interesting/appealing to the audience as people do not see writing like this very often anymore.
